Went and filled one of our tags yesterday. Got one that was just under 12 feet long. Took us several hours to skin out a cut off the meat. Almost more work than it was worth but it sure was fun. Nothing like sticking a harpoon in an animal twice your size.

Yeah, we got him down at Santee. It was definitely an adrenalin rush. Just sucks to hear from the place where we were going to sell the hide to that the market has crashed. A year ago we could have gotten up to $100 per foot for the hide and due to the economy crash, we can't get over $11 a foot.

Very nice gator.
The hide market is down & will stay there a while. You might try tanning the hide & make some belts, wallets & boots from it. Tanning will run $18-30 a ft. Try Sebring Custom Tanning in Florida. ((863) 655-1600 They do deer hides too) Custom boots can be made for about $175 a pair. Wallets & belts for around $40-50 each. Try Cowtown boots in Texas. Just make sure you have all the meat removed from the hide & it's SALTED with a mixing or table salt. You can use a pressure washer to remove the smaller amounts of meat & fat. Once salted, keep it cool & dry and out of direct sunlight. |
