Default Any other stickbow shooters out there?

Am new to this site - must say it looks like an interesting place - and thought this area deserves an "opening", sooo... I've been shooting recurves & longbows since the early 60's (yeah, that makes me officially "old" ). My current love is a Howard Hill longbow, 65# at my draw length of 28". The bow is 5 lams of bamboo with black glass on the back and belly; a gaboon ebony riser and elk horn tip overlays. It casts a 650 grain homemade Chundoo (lodgepole pine) arrow with "authority" (whatever that means ). Any other recurve/longbow archers out there?

Jim

Sounds like a nice bow js and I started with the compound about 3 years ago and have not taken any game yet but still trying so I haven't graduated to the long bow yet. I do have several friends that love them and glad to have you on the forum. Welcome and looking for some interesting post from you this year.

I'm a new guy to archery period but I'd love to get a recurve or long bow eventually.

I've shot a Browning for a while, just wasn't any good with it. I play around with it still but would take my Diamond any day.

I have a Jeffery custom take down I have owned for about 20 years. I love that bow. About all I use it for now is fishing. I use to hunt and shoot a few club shoots with it. I think it looks and feels better with a zerodrag hanging on it.

I've got an old Bear Super Kodiac and a Grizzly. I've shot recurves for years and in some 3D shoots. They are more fun to shoot IMO. Still hunt with a PSE compound. If I ever get a stand that is consistent I would love to stick one with a recurve.

Default A Stick and a String

I shoot a recure and a traditional long bow . The long bow is my favorite. Handmade of hickory and it will really send an arrow on its way. No gadgets or gizmos just skill and a lot of fun. Originally I started bowhunting with a Martin compound then bought a Black Bear. An injury to my shoulder stopped the compound use for a while. Now i never use the compound

Glad to see I'm not the only "ol' timer" on here...

jford - I too have a Super K & grizzly. Matter of fact, I'll be hunting with the Super K this year as I had to retire my longbow - that 65# just got to be too much...

I prefer my long bow because it's custom made and has 2 draw weights!
Still shoot the recurve on my range . Been thinking about a crossbow, just to give it a try and for demo so folks can try it out before buying one. And no you are not the only oldtimer!! Gadgets and gizmos come and go but the thrill of the hunt and skill needed for these type weapons require patient practice.
Almost like Golf but I dont play the game anymore.
Good luck on your hunting!!

I made the switch to traditional a few years ago and currently have both recurves (Bear grizzly) and and longbows, I primarily shoot the longbows, just because I like it more, teh one I hunt with is a PSE legacy 60# at 28". Currently I shoot easton legacy arrows with Magnus stinger blades. I've never taken anything with it, except rabbits. I set up some stands for the longbow for this year, hoping to get a shot at something this season.

Shot longbows and recurves until I was injured. Hunt with a xbow at the moment. Taught myself to shoot lefty and will be getting a custom longbow from Dryad Bows with a shoulder on both sides. Can still shoot righty, but need a brace to hold the arm up when holding bow and pulling back string.

i went traditional in 1992 or 1993...cant remember. First bow was Jeffery Royal Hunter....red oak limbs, clear glass, mountain camo riser. Owen was shooting milk jugs behind shop and Tom was working the sale when I picked it up. It is on its third set of snake skins to help hide the shiny clear glass...and will be using it this year coming in woods. Been through a host of others but on my wall in addition to the Royal Hunter are a Habu recurve and an osage selfbow made for me by Joe Mattingly the month before he died of cancer. I also have an unfinished hickory stave that is about 70% done that I stopped working on at 9-11 as I was deployed 5 days later. Hope to get around to finishing it this year or next. Got a yew blank in garage but that is all....

stickbows are like firearms...every one you sell or trade you regret some time later. So I have resigned myself to not sell bows or guns any more......4 years and holding.

First off I would like to say “hey” to all, I am new here and to archery. I bought my first bow (a Samick Sage takedown recurve 45# @ 28”) about three weeks ago and I am trying to figure out what I am doing, I did figure out how to put the arrow on the bow string. I went to Jeffery's archery last Friday and spoke with Tom (a very knowledgeable person) and am trying to follow his advise but I think it will take time. I have used rifle, shotgun and pistol all my life but never anything to do with archery so it is getting a little interesting.

Well...my bows are changing...got a couple more coming. I sent that stave in garage off...it wasnt yew but vine maple. So I contacted maybe the best vine maple guy in country....John Strunk. Asked if he would see if it was worth anything and could make a bow for someone.

He sent an email and it is set up for my draw length and weight....hahaha so will have a nice John Strunk vine maple selfbow within a week or two at most.

I also was looking for bow for nephew to help him graduate from the 20# fiberglass bow he started with last month. Found him (me) a nice Bear Kodiak Magnum 52", 45#@28....green glass and riser. Should have it within a week. Might be a little too strong for him until he is another year or two older so might have to get him something else for time being. LOL

Shooting my jeffery every night in yard...cant wait to take it into woods and plug a couple does after 15 Sep when tags are legal.
